Fasting and Weight Loss – Intermittent Fasting

Article by Joe Hewitt

There are many weight loss programs to choose from these days. Most are based on severely restricting the foods you can eat, others are based on severely restricting calories while others suggest using silly gimmicks. Most of these programs fail miserably over the long run. The idea of fasting and weight loss, or intermittent fasting, is a fresh new approach and one that is easily to maintain.

Generally, fasting is believed by most to be dangerous since depriving your body of nutrients is not a healthy idea, especially when the fasts last for long periods of time. But what about voluntarily abstaining from food for a short set period of time? This can be accomplished without jeopardizing your health, if done properly. There are also advantages for scheduled short term fasting, including detoxification, healing and losing weight. Fasting to lose weight will be reviewed here, the other two will be discussed in another article.

If fasting for weight loss is to be safe and successful, it should be done in a healthy manner. Fasting for short periods of time, or intermittent fasting, is a healthy way to fast because you’re regularly still getting nutrients, it you are eating properly. There are a variety of different ways to intermittently fast:

Skip Meals – The skipped meal can be planned or unplanned. The important factor is, at you next meal to not eat more that you normally would to make up for the missed meal.Shorten Eating Window – By shortening the time between your first meal of the day and your last meal, your night time fast will be longer. Two Meals – Simply a meal at the start of the day, and one at the end of the day.Every Other Day Fast – This is a very risky undertaking and should only be performed for a week at a time and no more than two times a year.24 Hour Fast – This is the preferred way for fasting and weight loss. It is suggested to be done from the last meal one day to the same time the next day and no more than two times a week.

The most important thing to keep in mind when fasting is to not eat more the next meal or the next non-fasting period even though you will be very tempted to do so. You might be tempted to want to eat more, but as long as you eat healthy, it will not be required. Remember, by eating more calories than you body will burn, you will add to the fat stores you lowered while you fasted.
